A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:
Data about both employee and student commuting habits was gathered through the use of a survey. The survey was developed with the help of Student Affairs and Services using Campus Labs, and consisted of 45 questions, taking approximately ten minutes to complete. The survey included designated sections depending on their identification as a student or staff/faculty, and then posed questions for all affiliates to answer.
The survey was distributed on July 8, 2019 at 10:00 AM. This included being sent to all undergraduate students enrolled in both summer courses and for the fall and winter semesters, as well as to all staff, and faculty within the UTM community.
The survey was open for a duration of two weeks and closed on July 23, 2019 for data analysis. A reminder email was sent on July 15, 2019, one week after the initial email was sent to facilitate more participation in the survey. An incentive was offered for participants to optionally enter their utoronto email at the end of the survey for a chance to win one of five $50 UTM Food Vouchers.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
UTM's high proportion of students who use sustainable means of transportation is largely due to the success of the U-Pass program. The U-Pass is a universal transit pass that provides the user with unlimited trips on MiWay, Mississauga's local transit system. A U-Pass holder simply shows the MiWay driver her or his U-Pass card and T-card (UT student ID) when boarding. A mandatory U-Pass fee is automatically charged to each eligible student's U of T account. All full-time and part-time undergraduate and UTM-affiliated graduate students are eligible for the U-Pass. Staff are currently unable to participate in the U-Pass program.
The UTM campus is extremely well-served by public transit, with multiple MiWay (Mississauga's public transit service) routes stopping on campus. Brampton Transit also stops on campus, and there are routes that link the campus to GO transit and the Toronto transit system. In addition, the campus bus shelter is fully enclosed and heated to make improve comfort for those who are waiting for the bus during winter.
