The University of Virginia is the academic sponsor of the Semester at Sea Program. The Voyage Theme for the Spring 2010 semester was sustainability. The 109 day voyage visited ten countries and offered an curriculum and co-curricular activities centered on sustainability.
The University Unity Project, a Student Council initiative, seeks to unify the student body around a specific issue. For 2009-2010 Academic Year, UVA students voted to make sustainability the annual theme of the Unity Project. Student leaders came together under the Unity Project to coordinate the largest Earth Week celebration yet, with over 40 events and thousands of students participating.
