Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
Yes

A brief description of the incentive program(s):
COURSE DEVELOPMENT GRANT PROGRAM
UVA’s Sustainability Course Development Grant program has enabled faculty members to create new sustainability‐related courses or revise existing courses to include a sustainability focus. Since the fall of 2017, grants for the development of 35 new sustainability courses have been created across departments and topic areas. Funded courses include: Corporate Resilience and Sustainability; Ethics of Food; Smart Cities Enabling Sustainability; Asceticism and Sustainability; Anthrochemistry; Climate History; Sustainable Local Economies; Islam, Science, and the Environment; Climate Swerve: Regional Writing on Sustainable Climate Solutions, and more.

SUSTAINABILITY FACULTY FELLOWS PROGRAM
An inaugural cohort of Sustainability Faculty Fellows were selected from across disciplines in 2018 to develop and regularly offer core sustainability courses and to grow the pan-university Global Environments + Sustainability major curriculum. The five Sustainability Faculty Fellows co‐teach the Global Sustainability foundation course, developed a new Economics of Sustainability and the Environment course, and co‐advise students in the Global Environments + Sustainability Research Capstone Seminar. These courses and the Global Environments + Sustainability major are accepting significantly more students in order to meet increasing demand and reach UVA students.

A brief description of the incentives that academic staff who participate in the program(s) receive:
COURSE DEVELOPMENT GRANT PROGRAM
Each of the 35 recipients of sustainability course development grants received $8000 to cover their time, course materials, and other course-related expenses as needed.

SUSTAINABILITY FACULTY FELLOWS PROGRAM
Each of the Faculty Fellows receives one-course buyout per year (minimum $45,000 value), and each serves a three-year term. In addition, one fellow serves as the Director of the program and receives a two-course buyout per year, for a three year term.
