All campus area and space values are derived from GIS data that is maintained by UVA Geospatial Enterprise Services (https://www.fm.virginia.edu/depts/operations/ges.html)
The Energy intensive space is less than reported in previous years because we are now able to easily output the specific space types called for in each category (research lab, hospital, other) using our space management system. We previously took the approach of listing the total GSF of each building containing the energy intensive use.
The following was included in each energy intensive space type calculation:
laboratory space: included anything that was categorized as a lab in our space inventory database. The majority of this space are research labs (~865K ASF), but also includes class labs, open labs and any lab support space as well.
healthcare space: This includes all space in the space database with a FICM code in the 800s. Most of this space is in our main hospital, but also includes other clinical/diagnostic lab space on Grounds.
other energy intensive space: Based on the definition, this includes all of our dining halls and other food service, on-Campus convenience stores and data centers/server rooms on Grounds.
