Has the institution engaged in a structured assessment process during the previous three years to improve diversity, equity and inclusion on campus?:
Yes

A brief description of the assessment process and the framework, scorecard(s) and/or tool(s) used:
The University of Virginia has engaged in extensive self-study and progressed in many areas considering its historical context, legacies of slavery in the south, and systemic racism.

The Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has engaged all schools and units at UVA in the strategic assessment and planning process known nationally as Inclusive Excellence. Each school or unit's Inclusive Excellence plan addresses the current status of diversity, equity and inclusion in their part of the broader organization. The Inclusive Excellence plans, containing metrics and benchmarks, are then used to evaluate the schools/units' progress related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. See link to more information here: https://dei.virginia.edu/inclusive-excellence

In addition, the Diversity Dashboard at UVA continues to visualize demographic data for undergraduate, graduate students, staff, and faculty. The Diversity Dashboard is available here: https://diversitydata.virginia.edu/ These data are drawn from UVA's Office of Institutional Research and Analytics.

Furthermore, the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has hired an Assistant Director for Assessment and Data Analytics who collaborates with the Office of Institutional Research and Analytics and the Provost Office on DEI-related assessments.

The ODEI is engaged in key assessment projects including one on student belonging and another on undergraduate STEM major persistence. In collaboration with the Office for Institutional Research and Analytics and the Center or Teaching Excellence, ODEI maintains a departmental dashboard for directors, chairs, and administrators to track progress. The ODEI, in collaboration with the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, maintains a faculty pipeline dashboard to provide information about UVA faculty representation relative to AAU averages and PhD and postdocs by discipline. More information about these studies and dashboards can be found here: https://dei.virginia.edu/analytics

Moreover, UVA engages with the Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) Survey to assess the student experience on campus. UVA's Office of Institutional Research and Analytics distributes the survey. The most recently available results (2022 for undergraduates and 2021 for grad/profesionals) for the survey are available here: https://ira.virginia.edu/data-analytics/survey-data/seru

Faculty are asked at intervals to participate in the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) Survey. For additional information about the COACHE Survey and a summary of the most recently available results, see: https://provost.virginia.edu/subsite/coache

Yes

Does the assessment process address student outcomes related to diversity, equity and success?:
Yes

Does the assessment process address employee outcomes related to diversity and equity?:
Yes

A brief description of the most recent assessment findings and how the results are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:
Below are a few examples of how assessment findings shape policies, programs, and initiatives:

Departmental Dashboards that show dis-aggregated drop, fail, and withdrawal rates are continually updated and shared with departmental chairs, directors, faculty, and staff to inform them of inequities that may exist relative to other departments and/or national averages. Results from periodic surveys and studies are posted on a number of UVA office websites including the Office for Research and Analytics, Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the Provost Office.

Results from surveys such as the 2022 UVA Student Experience in a Research University (SERU) are reported to Diversity Council and the Associate Deans for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, highlighting relevant findings to inform their programming, funding allocations, and advocacy.

An example of a more specific assessment focused on undergraduate STEM education is the 2021 UVA Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Driving Change initiative self-study that informed the proposal and implementation of that initiative and its sister initiative HHMI Inclusive Excellence 3. Information about those funded initiatives that resulted in part from the assessment process is available here: https://provost.virginia.edu/subsite/undergraduate-education/stem-initiatives

In June 2020, President Ryan convened the Racial Equity Task Force, which presented a set of goals for the university; UVA's Board of Visitors endorsed those goals in September 2020. in September 2020. Please see more information about the task force and its report here: https://virginiaequitycenter.org/racial-equity-task-force

Are the results of the most recent structured diversity and equity assessment shared with the campus community?:
Yes

A brief description of how the assessment results are shared with the campus community:
The Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion's (ODEI) Inclusive Excellence lead contact shares results with the campus community through the ODEI communications channels, including its social media, and on the Inclusive Excellence website: https://dei.virginia.edu/inclusive-excellence In addition, the ODEI Assistant Director for Assessment and Data Analytics shares assessment results directly with members of the UVA community and consults with them on DEI-related assessment projects. Other units share assessment results as appropriate, including UVA Communications, the Provost Office, and the Office of Institutional Research and Analytics through their websites, social media, other media, email, and meetings, among other avenues. When appropriate, findings and recommendations from assessments are presented to the Board of Visitors.
