The University of Washington has an occupational health and safety management program that complies with the Washington State Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) (Washington Administrative Code 296-24, 296-62, and 296-800), which is administered by the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I), Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
This is achieved primarily through the Washington State required Accident Prevention Plan (APP) which covers the anticipated workplace hazards that generally apply to employees across the University and follows the UW policy set in Administrative Policy Statement (APS) 10.3.
The APP outlines policies and procedures implemented to reduce or eliminate hazards including hazard identification, education and training, and compliance inspections. It is the core health and safety guidance that applies to all employees across the University. Specific health & safety programs/hazards that are specific to worksites and departments are addressed in customized supplemental accident prevention plans.

A brief description of the methodology used to track and calculate the number of recordable incidents of work-related injury or ill health :
The University of Washington’s Accident Prevention Plan outlines the University’s accident investigation and reporting procedures in accordance with Washington Administrative Code 296-800-320. UW’s Environmental Health & Safety Department maintains the online accident and reporting system, which records employee injuries, illnesses, and near-misses so that preventative measures can be implemented to both control the conditions and acts that contribute to accidents. All incident reports entered into the online accident reporting system are screened by EH&S. The reports are triaged and forwarded to other campus partners as needed based on the type and severity of the incidents. The reports are also then sent to the applicable assigned organizational health and safety committees for review on a monthly basis. EH&S also reviews the reports to determine what is required to be recorded on the OSHA 300A log of work-related injuries and illnesses.
Annual number of recordable incidents of work-related injury or ill health per 100 FTE employees:
0.28
