Part 1. Institutional sustainability learning outcomes

The University of Washington requires all undergraduates to fulfill a Diversity credit requirement. Courses that meet the Diversity requirement focus on the sociocultural, political, and/or economic diversity of the human experience at local, regional, or global levels. This requirement is intended to help you develop an understanding of the complexities of living in increasingly diverse and interconnected societies.

In addition, there are General Education requirements including Areas of Knowledge around the Natural World (NW) and Individuals & Societies (I&S).

NW courses focus on the experimental study of the physical world. I&S courses focus on the experimental study of human behavior both individually and socially. This includes the history, development, and dynamics of human behavior, as well as social and cultural institutions.

While in many cases, the combination of these requirements gives students an understanding of sustainability, they do not meet the standard of a sustainability learning outcome.

Part 2. Program-level sustainability learning outcomes

A brief description of how the figure above was determined:
The 2020 Assessment Office report asked programs to self-identify if they had sustainability learning outcomes. For programs that did not self-identify, UW Sustainability staff reviewed available information to determine if programs had an outcome that included sustainability or a sustainability-themed required course.

The 2020 Assessment Office report did not include comprehensive responses from all UW departments. In some cases we referred to the previous report, used in our 2018 STARS report. As the previous Assessment reports covered more programs and the goals generally do not change over time, in a few cases we used the those previously reported goals when there were not learning outcomes stated elsewhere.

After we identified programs with a learning outcome, we found the numbers of graduates (bachelors and graduate degrees) from the 2019-2020 academic year.
