Waterloo launched its Sustainability Certificate in 2018. Run by the Sustainability Office, this is a 7 workshop series that introduces employees to various concepts and issues around sustainability, including an introductory module, energy and climate, transportation, food, waste, and biodiversity modules, and a capstone module on leadership, behaviour change, and change management. Each module begins with a high-level discussion of the issue in question (i.e. Climate Change), and then filters down to local, institutional, and personal actions, approaches, and resources. The Certificate is open for any employee to complete at their own pace as course offerings permit.

In 2016, the focus was on the Green Office Program, in 2017 it was on sustainable food choices in collaboration with the campus dietitian, and in 2018 it was on the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
