A brief description of the guidelines for franchisees:
Although Western has not adopted sustainability policies or guidelines for food service franchisees operating on campus, Western encourages them to be as sustainable as possible. Most franchisees have been flexible and receptive with these changes.
A few examples of Western's initiatives include:
- Encouraging franchisees to provide take-out containers that can be recycled and are accepted by Western’s recycling system (e.g., Salad Bistro, Manchu Wok)
- Composting coffee grinds at three Tim Hortons location on campus
- Implementing a system where Coke picks up and recycles the plastic wraps from cases of soft drinks, waters and juices. This has alleviated and taken much of the plastic wraps out of our system.
- Grading new suppliers higher than suppliers that take
sustainable approaches to their business
