A brief description of how sustainability is included in new employee orientation:
A Staff Awareness Sustainable Actions Checklist is available as guidance material for all new employees, as part of the "Welcome to Western New Employee Orientation" website and package. This checklist provides useful solutions for making their office space more sustainable, including environmental, social, and economic aspects.
Please see : http://www.uwo.ca/hr/working/new_employee/index.html
It is also worth noting that Hospitality Services has taken the initiative to include sustainability as part of the new staff training (Hospitality receives approximately 60 new employees per year). This is a 30 minute presentation that is conducted by the Nutrition Manager and the Conference Manager of Hospitality Services. The session is part of the 3-day new hire training program. In addition to that, the Food Service Assistants are trained on the "xchange4change ecotainer to-go program" (residence dining) as well as on recycling as residence dining continues to do the majority of waste separation from the back-of -the-house.
As part of sustainable landscaping strategies, Western Grounds and Recycling supervisor gives formal training to his landscaping staff, including a presentation entitled "Native Plants, Native Soils". This presentation provides staff with how to protect and restore natural soil, the importance of native plants, how to be smart about salt use, proper snow removal, integrated pest management strategies, and diverting yard waste from landfill.
Lastly, Housing has added about 30 minutes to their sustainability training for about 120 Rez Sophs and Rez Staff on Main Campus. Their Sustainability Coordinator is also responsible for providing a brief sustainability presentation for In-Housing Staff.
