A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
Western has a history of being involved with leading edge environmental sustainability in the research, teaching, and administrative operations. Western is a signatory to the: 1. 1990 Talloires Declaration that pledged universities to actions "for incorporating sustainability and environmental literacy in teaching, research, operations and outreach". 2. 1991 Halifax Declaration which included a commitment to "ensure that the voice of the university be clear and uncompromising in its commitment to the principle and practice of sustainable development within the university, and at the local, national and global levels". 3. 2009 Council of Ontario Universities' committed to a Greener World pledge to "assist in finding solutions to the challenges of environmental sustainability, share knowledge about sustainability and climate change, and incorporate, wherever possible principles of sustainability into our operations". Additionally, Western's Sustainability Team encourages Westerners and Londoner's to abide by London's anti car idling bylaw. Western's Board has approved an anti-sweatshops policy: "Western apparel will not be made under substandard conditions or by those working under minimum wage, the Board of Governors has decided.
