A brief description of the institution’s methodology for evaluating employee satisfaction and engagement:
Western University worked in collaboration with Metrics@Work to conduct the We Speak survey in February of 2017. The survey is built around Drivers of Engagement, work factors at three levels (job, department and University-wide) that affect an employee’s level of engagement, which in turn affects organizational and work outcomes. These drivers of engagement looked at topics such as change management, collaboration, communication, decision making, leadership, performance management, recognition, support for diversity and support for improvement and innovation. Job-specific measures included supervision, support for research, colleague relationships, physical environment and recognition. Overall, these drivers help measure the level of engagement that Western employees have with the institution, with their colleagues and with our mission. The same survey was applied for the first time in 2012, and thus it helped establish a baseline for comparison over the years. With assessments every five years, the use of the We Speak survey allows to understand which drivers of engagement are effective, which ones are lacking, and to determine if actions taken to improve those drivers had the desired effect. Once the survey is over, leaders at all levels determine next steps, so that faculty and staff can be engaged at a local level through We Act, a series of commitments and actions that each unit will take to ensure that any gaps in performance are being addressed.
A brief description of the mechanism(s) by which the institution addresses issues raised by the evaluation (including examples from the previous three years):
This survey is also used by other colleges and universities in the province and the country, as well as other public and private organizations, making it a useful bench-marking tool to compare institutional engagement from employees.
