Western Heads East
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Western Heads East is a collaboration between Western and African partners to enhance community health, economic development, and the empowerment of women in highly underserviced areas of Sub-Saharan Africa through probiotic foods.
Western professor Dr. Gregor Reid's and Brescia professor Dr. Sharareh Hekmat's research on the benefit of probiotics led to the creation of probiotic yogurt as the focal point for the Western Heads East (WHE) program.
Annually, Western students travel to East Africa on internships to support the local implementation of probiotic food social enterprises with host partners in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.
