1st campaign

Name of the campaign:
Plastic Film Recycling

A brief description of the campaign:
From 2014-2020, the Plastic Film Recycling Program's goal has been to divert plastic films (such as grocery bags and pallet wrap) from the waste stream. The program officially started March 1st, 2014 with the rollout of twelve drop-off boxes across the academic buildings on campus, out of which ten were placed in public areas, and two in maintenance areas, including the Shipping & Receiving department of the University. As we essentially started the program without any particular funding, we utilized donated cardboard-containers and mounted self-made signs on them.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
Students collected the plastic film and baled it. When enough accumulated, it was shipped to a company that recycled it. On 3/2/18, 45 bales (960 lbs) of plastic film were recycled. On 5/10/19, 75 bales (1380 lbs) were recycled. Material was collected and baled through the beginning of 2020, but operation stopped due to covid. The recycling company has not responded to requests to pick up our current stock of baled plastic film. We will seek other partners and try to rebuild this program.
