UW-Madison is a member of the UW System Sustainability network ( https://www.wisconsin.edu/sustainability) which desires to be a system of university institutions, whose commitments and behaviors are ecologically sound, economically efficient, and socially responsible now, and for future generations to come. The network sees a sustainable future for our system where: students, faculty and staff develop a shared ethic of responsibility; our statewide commitment to the environment is honored; and sustainable principles, practices and values are infused into the culture of our institutions as they continue to change and grow.

Staff from UW-Madison (Jason Gallup, Catherine H. Middlecamp, and Nathan Jandl) published the article "Training the Sustainers: An Undergraduate Sustainability Intern Program" in The Sustainability Journal of Record (https://doi.org/10.1089/sus.2020.0007).

While published in an academic journal it is constructed as a history and case study of the UW-Madison student intern program.

In the article, the authors offer their reflections on the past 10 years of the student intern program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Office of Sustainability. They first outline the history of the program, which was founded upon a commitment to “honor and engage students.” Next, the authors describe the three goals that drive the current program: 1.) deepening sustainability literacy, 2.) developing professional skills, and 3.) consulting with campus partners. The article concludes by recounting the lessons learned over the past decade, ones that have helped reshape and redirect the intern program.

A brief description of the mentoring relationship and activities:
The UW-System Sustainability Network sets-up mentoring relationships between schools. Specifically within the STARS working group UW-Madison staff have assisted and mentored other UW-System schools through their STARS reporting and peer review process (UW-Green Bay; UW-Eau Claire; UW-Milwaukee; UW-River Falls; UW-Stevens Point).

A brief description of the peer review activities:
Staff from the Office of Sustainability (Alex Frank and Jake McCulloch) are a part of the UW-System STARS Peer Review team and have participated in the peer review of three recent STARS submissions:
- UW-Milwaukee
- UW-River Falls
- UW-Stevens Point

Big Ten and Friends Sustainability Group is an informal network of sustainability representatives at Big Ten and other universities. UW-Madison has been an active and funding member, supporting the networks efforts of improving sustainability outcomes through sharing lessons learned and best practices.
