Eco-Reps are hired by the Department of residence Life. Students submit an application and are selected for telephone and face-to-face interviews with staff from Residence Life and the Sustainability Office.

Students receive 8 hours of initial training in peer-to-peer education, job requirements, effective methods of engaging students to take action, and understanding the staff and resources available for programming. Bi-weekly meetings from September-May provide time for additional training (e.g. specific sustainability topics) and reinforcement.

The program is co-supervised by an Assistant Director of Residence Life and the Director of Sustainability. A chancellor-funded intern serves as a student coordinator and helps with program assessment. Funding for Eco-Rep stipends is split between Residence Life and the Office of Sustainability. Funding for supplies are provided by a range of sources including Residence Life, Sustainability and student fee funds depending on the projects that Eco-Reps initiate. An estimate of total program cost is about $15,000 per year.
