A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage student research in sustainability:
The Sustainability Office offers student internships year-round. Funding primarily comes from the Student Titan Employment Program (STEP) and from externally funded research grants. STEP is a university financial aid program that offers students quality educational experiences while providing faculty and staff members with assistance in areas that include research. STEP student research projects have included an analysis of parking dept records for transportation planning, air mileage, a history of Earth Day observations on campus, greenhouse gas inventories, tree identification and inventories, GIS mapping of campus sustainability features, and waste management policy studies. External grants have funded research to produce a regional business sustainability index, study introduction of food waste sorting to dining operations, and study the decomposition of bioplastics in the campus anaerobic digester.
