The Plan also defines five university-wide strategic action initiatives, also referred to as areas of distinctiveness, including "sustainability" (http://www.uwosh.edu/home/strategicplan/highlights/UWO-AR0910-GoverningIdeas.pdf). The most recent Strategic Plan Update includes sustainability accomplishments (http://www.uwosh.edu/home/strategicplan/university-wide-teams/sustainability-2) with environmental dimensions listed under the accomplishments for Operations and specific goals for dining, solid waste, and buildings.

One of the five Strategic Directions defined in the Strategic Plan is: "Develop a Diverse, Engaged Community of Lifelong Learners and Collaborative Scholars". The foundation for the social dimensions of sustainability can be found in the six Core Values used to derive the strategic plan, including tenets for: Diversity and Inclusivity; Engagement and Support; and Social Awareness and Responsiveness. The University also follows a set of mission goals for the University of Wisconsin System that includes "Serve the needs of women, minority, disadvantaged, disabled and non-traditional students and seek racial and ethnic diversification of the student body and the professional faculty and staff." Academically this strategic direction is expressed in a new set of Learning Outcomes that includes the following: Knowledge of sustainability and its applications; Civic knowledge and engagement—local and global; Intercultural knowledge and competence; and Ethical reasoning and action. The Plan also defines five university-wide strategic action initiatives, also referred to as areas of distinctiveness, including "sustainability" (http://www.uwosh.edu/home/strategicplan/highlights/UWO-AR0910-GoverningIdeas.pdf).
