A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
UW Oshkosh expanded the space, staffing and scope of the Aquatic Research Laboratory to encompass biosolids testing in response to needs of the emerging biodigester and composting industries. The facility has been renamed the Environmental Research and Innovation Center. Industry partners have contributed equipment, exchanged protocols and provided training. New research projects are studying the biochemical and energy (biogas) potential of organic waste streams from food and agriculture industries, as well as new bioplastic formulations that could serve as biodegradable replacements for petroleum-based plastics. The lab has maintained its research and public health testing of ground water and swimming beaches.
