Campus heat is provided by a central heating plant utilizing steam boilers and distribution. The steam boilers are set up to utilize both natural gas and coal, and test firings have been done with biomass pellets. State mandates required UWRF to burn a portion of coal to maintain certifications. Due to the short heating season in spring 2012, the proportion of coal burned amounted to 7% of total campus heat in 2012. UWRF heating plant manager does not intend to burn any additional coal for the 2013 heating season as certifications have been met and natural gas prices make it advantageous to use over coal at this time.
