In 2019 Vanier staff and students began planting perennial trees shrubs and herbs with the aim of creating a food forest. The food forest now includes over 100 fruit trees and bushes, as well as an herbaceous layer, root vegetables, ground covers, and vines. Two students are hired throughout the summer and numerous students particiate throughout the year. In the summer of 2022 a student intern coordinated the creation of a small pond. A teacher has been granted release time to support the intigration of the academic sector into the gardens, and numerous classes participate each year, including students from the early childhood education program. A permaculture workshop was offered to a group of 3-5 year olds from a local daycare. The food forest was officially launched in September, 2022. Food waste collected around campus is composted on-site and incorporated into the gardens. Food from the garden is served during certain campus events and herbal teas have been distributed to various departments (student services, unions, Indigenous Student Centre...).
