A brief description of the native plant program, policy, or practice:
The Campus Design Principles prepared by Sasaki Associates (Revised August 2010) outlines the landscaping and design principles for Virginia Tech. The Landscaping section begins on page 15 of the document. The Landscaping section contains many specific references to native plants, such as “to the practical extent possible, tree and shrub plantings should consist of species that are native to the Appalachian Mountain region” (p. 23). Listings of acceptable native plants for use on campus are also provided throughout pages 15-33 and are categorized by the area on campus that the plantings will be placed.

The Office of University Planning created the Meadow Grass interpretive signage to highlight Virginia Tech’s sustainable grounds-keeping strategies and native plants. The Meadow Grass interpretive signage includes a description of sustainable grounds-keeping strategies in 18 locations around campus. For examples of the signage, a map of campus meadows, and photos of the actual signage in the meadows please see: http://www.facilities.vt.edu/documents/sustainability/unlinked/06232011/sign_nativeplants.asp
