A brief description of how printing is limited:
At Virginia Tech two departments are responsible for regulating printing on campus. These departments are Computer-Integrated Learning Spaces (CILS), which is responsible for computer-integrated classrooms and laboratories, and the Library Photocopy Auxiliary, which is responsible for print services in the campus libraries. Both departments place restrictions on printing.
Computer-Integrated Learning Spaces uses Pharos Uniprint to charge users by the page in all computer-integrated classrooms and labs that are managed by central IT services as well as several departmental spaces. CILS began charging for printing over 10 years ago and reduced printing volume from over 1 million sheets per year (when printing was free) to fewer than 250,000 sheets per year currently.
Library Photocopy Auxiliary, an auxiliary service, is a cost recovery unit charged with overseeing the printing and copying usage in the library. The library copiers function by card activation and printing is picked up and paid for at the customer service desk. Library Photocopy Auxiliary is currently working towards adding the Pharos copier/printer control system to manage usage.
