A brief description of the child care program, policy, or practice:
Virginia Tech has an on-site child care center, as well as a partnership with a local facility.
The VT Child Development Center for Learning and Research, part of the Department of Human Development, provides care for 42 children from 16 months through pre-school, as well as serving as a training and research facility. In its seventh year as a full-day, full-year program, the center originated in the 1940’s and is accredited by the National Association for Young Children (NAEYC), an honor achieved by only 7% of programs nationwide.
See http://www.humandevelopment.vt.edu/cdclr.html for information about the VT Child Development Center for Learning and Research.
In addition, Virginia Tech has a contract with Rainbow Riders, a local child care program, through which 60% of the slots in their two centers are guaranteed for children of university faculty, staff and graduate students– for a total of 268. The five year, renewable contract began in July 2009 and includes the contribution of private, unrestricted funds from each of the Colleges and the offices of the President and the Provost (total 10) based on numbers of faculty, staff and students. Families are admitted primarily based on waiting list order and center availability; however each of these 10 units has a yearly opportunity to put forward the name of a faculty member for whom child care is a significant recruitment or retention priority. The University will work with the center to enhance the likelihood of these families getting slots, although there is no guarantee. Rainbow Riders is about 3.5 miles from the main VT campus and is also NAEYC accredited.
