In the Virginia Tech Campus Design Principles document, approved by the Board of Visitors in June, 2010, a list of preferred woody plants for use on the Virginia Tech campus is provided that specifies many drought-resistant trees and shrubbery native to the Appalachian Mountain region.
Examples include: Prunus pennsylvanica (Chokecherry); Rhododendron calandulace (Flame Azalea); Rhododendron maximum (Rosebay Rhododendron); Viburnum lentago (Nannyberry); Viburnum prunifolium (Blackhaw); Virbunum trilobum (American Cranberrybush); Xanthoriza simplicissima (Yellowroot); Crataegus viridis (Winter King Hawthorne); Ilex glabra (Inkberry); Ilex verticillata (Inkberry); Fothergilla major (Large Fothergilla); Aronia arbutifolia (Red Chokeberry); Aronia melanocarpa (Black Chokeberry); Fothergilla gardenia (Dwarf Fothergilla.)
Plants requiring a lot of water are only planted in areas that have access to naturally occurring water (steam banks, Duck Pond, etc.)
