A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
The Office of Multicultural Programs and Services leads a variety of trainings in the Division of Student Affairs.
Tunnel of Oppression: An educational experience designed to challenge ideas about diversity, tolerance, and oppression by immersing individuals in multimedia presentations to raise awareness. This experience has been offered as part of transition programs for new students.
Dialogue Across Differences: A discussion series to explore diversity, inclusion, and dominant/ subordinate social paradigms. Facilitator-led discussions provide a safe and welcoming environment for exploration. For more information contact Ray Williams Jr., cwilliam@vt.edu
Safe Zone Training: Established in 1998, the Safe Zone program was established as a collaborative effort between the Dean of Student’s Office, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Alliance (LGBTA), the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Caucus (LGBT Caucus) and the Office of Equal Opportunity. Now coordinated through Multicultural Programs and Services, the Safe Zone program exists to educate the Virginia Tech community on topics related to the LGBTQ community. Safe Zones are members of the program who are committed to providing a more inclusive and accepting environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning communities and their allies.
