A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
Cultural Heritage Month celebrations are a critical part of education training for students at Virginia Tech. We host six separate heritage months and sponsor over 100 programs throughout. Safe Zone Training, established in 1998, has continued to be a strong presence on our campus. In the last year we hosted over 20 separate sessions and 15 by-request trainings for specific organizations and departments. Safe Zones are members of the program who are committed to providing a more inclusive and accepting environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning communities and their allies. Leadership development and advising of 5 University Chartered Student Organizations is provided by professional faculty in Multicultural Programs & Services. Those groups include Hokie PRIDE (LGBTQ group), Black Organizations Council, Latino Association of Student Organizations, Jewish Student Union, and Asian American Student Union. We host two Cultural Center spaces in the Squires Student Center. Both the Black Cultural Center and the Multicultural Center provide an environment for learning and engagement across difference Six welcome receptions engage returning students, faculty, and staff in welcoming new underrepresented students to the Virginia Tech community. Approximately 850 attendees total.
