A brief description of the institution’s natural wastewater systems and technologies:
Wastewater is managed by the Blacksburg-VPI Sanitation Authority at the Lower Stroubles Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant seven miles southwest of Virginia Tech. The wastewater treatment facility employs "highly-sustainable treatment procedures," and was one of the first municipal wastewater treatment facilities in Virginia to be awarded the Extraordinary Environmental Enterprise status in the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program based on the Blacksburg-VPI Sanitation Authority's dedication to environmental excellence and sustainability. In 2018, the facility became the first in Virginia to install an autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion digestion process in order to create Class A Exceptional Quality biosolids.
