Waste Minimization Task Force

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
With the language in the 2018 Strategic Plan to “Identify and prioritize opportunities to reduce resource consumption and waste,” this group was formed in May 2019 to:
-Research and examine best practices in the field – at other institutions and businesses
-Perform a waste flow analysis at W&L, including landfill, compost, recycling, eWaste, donations, and construction waste. Other waste that could be included are toxics and laboratory waste.
-Create detailed overview of waste process(es).
-Perform a waste bin analysis of various collection areas around campus
-Examine current and potential costs of waste management
-Create or augment waste tracking database, kept in one place
-Research best bins for our campus
-Produce waste minimization standards and plan for the entire campus
-Identify waste minimization targets for the next 5 and 10 years.

Membership is made up of representatives from the Office of Sustainability, Dining Services, University Facilities, Residence Life, faculty, students, and Communications.
