The lowest paid benefit eligible rate is $13.05 for a General Services worker in dining. University benefits average 30% per employee. This is well above Virginia’s minimum wage, ensuring that W&L is a desirable employer for lower-skilled workers. The University subsidizes the cost of health care premiums so that employees need not pay more than 10% of family income toward health care premiums.

Washington and Lee is committed to paying starting wages at levels that are consistent with a living wage in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Based on living wage guidelines published by MIT (http://livingwage.mit.edu/counties/51163), we will set our lowest range minimum at a level which represents the rate an individual must earn to support a family with two adults and one child. The executive director of budgets and compensation will adjust market reference ranges annually in July based on overall market movement and changing living wage guidelines.
