A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:
The purpose of the Green Department Certification Program is to engage WSU offices and departments in the work of making the entire university more sustainable and carbon neutral. The program is voluntary and competitive. Participating departments acquire points through sustainable practices. The number of points achieved determines certification at the bronze, silver, gold or green levels. Full program details can be found here: https://www.weber.edu/sustainability/green-department.html
A brief description of how the employee educators are selected:
Each participating office/department selects two to four Green Team leaders to educate the office/department and help them achieve their certification goals. These Green Team Leaders work directly with the Green Department Program Leader, housed within the Energy & Sustainability Office, to obtain the resources and information they need to achieve their certification goals. Green Teams are required by the program to meet at least once per semester to discuss progress.
A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
The Green Department Program Leader presents to each Green Team, when the team is initially created, and provides education on why the program was established, how the program works, and how to make the office/department more sustainable. Green Teams meet with the Program Leader at least once per semester for a progress check and to provide additional education as needed. Many green teams choose to meet with the Program Leader more than once per semester.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or paid faculty/staff coordination):
One full time employee within the Energy & Sustainability Office is dedicated to running the Green Department Certification Program and serves as the Program Leader. The Energy & Sustainability Office currently has a annual budget of $10,000 to provide Green Teams with needed education materials and resources. This budget is also used to purchase certification plaques and to provide incentive money to each green team as it achieves each level of certification.
