Documentation
Do the figures reported above cover one, two, or three academic years?:
A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
Courses designated as sustainability courses (the SUS course attribute), for both "all instructors" of a course or sections taught by a specific faculty, were provided for AY 2024 by Institutional Research and the Sustainability Practices and Research Center.
Our existing inventory includes some additional courses that include or focus on sustainability (as identified through past surveys, catalog review, environmentally focused majors, and consultation with individual faculty), but do not yet have the attribute. Occurrences of these courses on this updated list for 2023-24 were also identified by the Office of Institutional Research. These sections were added to the SUS sections list and are provided in the uploaded inventory. The course descriptions for the courses are on the second tab.
Timeframe of course count is AY 2024 (Summer 2023 - Spring 2024)
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:

Note on Total Course #:
For the total number of courses (undergrad and grad) offered at the institution for AY 24 the following course types were excluded from the overall total of 8204 (undergrad) and 832 (grad) (as is allowed at the institution’s discretion), from both the count of sustainability course offerings and the count of total courses:
Individually-directed courses/individual studies (e.g., thesis, independent study, practicum, private instruction)
Courses that are strictly practice-oriented, e.g.:
Medical courses that seem dedicated to clinical practice.
Music courses dedicated to performance, technique, or composition.
Physical education courses that are activity-based and team sports credit courses.
- INT - internship/coop work experience courses
These exclusions yeilded the reported totals of 82
The excel sheet with all sections offered in AY 24 and the exclusions indicated (highlighted with grey) is attached.
Note on Sustainability-Focused/Inclusive Courses:
The majority of courses listed are sustainability designated courses which carry a SUS attribute. Additional sections that have not yet been designated for SUS by faculty, but have been identified as including/focusing on sustainability are also included. These have been identified through data collection (including an earlier Fall 2021 survey and review of WSU's course catalog) and/or information from individual faculty members. Current semester sustainability-related courses, and links to the course inventory (near the bottom of the page), can be found at: https://www.weber.edu/sustainability/courses. Please note that the website is being updated during the summer (2024) to reflect our current list of SUS attributed courses and other classes that include/focus on sustainability. Not everything reported here may be on the website (as of May 2024).
