Carbon sinks

Figures needed to determine net carbon sinks:
Performance year Baseline year
Third-party verified carbon offsets purchased 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Institution-catalyzed carbon offsets generated 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from on-site composting 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from non-additional sequestration 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent ---

Adjusted net GHG emissions

Adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net GHG emissions 6,886.74 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 6,582.60 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Performance and baseline periods

Start and end dates of the performance year and baseline year (or three-year periods):
Performance year Baseline year
Start date Jan. 1, 2023 Jan. 1, 2009
End date Dec. 31, 2023 Dec. 31, 2009

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
The GHG emissions baseline was adopted during Wentworth's climate action planning process. The baseline was selected because it was the first year that had the most complete and accurate accounting of campus GHG emissions.

Part 1. Reduction in GHG emissions per person

Weighted campus users

Figures needed to determine “Weighted Campus Users”:
Performance year Baseline year
Number of students resident on-site 2,028 1,750
Number of employees resident on-site 5 4
Number of other individuals resident on-site 0 0
Total full-time equivalent student enrollment 3,724.50 3,441.50
Full-time equivalent of employees 664 503.50
Full-time equivalent of students enrolled exclusively in distance education 160 0
Weighted Campus Users 3,679.63 3,397.25

Metrics used in scoring for Part 1

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user 1.87 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 1.94 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Percentage reduction in adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user from baseline:
3.41

Part 2. GHG emissions per unit of floor area

Performance year floor area

Gross floor area of building space, performance year:
1,443,523 Gross square feet

Floor area of energy intensive building space, performance year:
Floor area
Laboratory space 138,407 Square feet
Healthcare space 0 Square feet
Other energy intensive space 20,179 Square feet

EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
1,740,516 Gross square feet

Metric used in scoring for Part 2

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per unit of EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
0.00 MtCO2e per square foot

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
GHG reduction efforts over the last few years included establishing a formal partnership with the utilities to pursue energy efficiency / GHG reductions. To-date over $1.5M in incentives have been received toward projects expected to save more than 9 MWh of electricity and have so far avoided more than 3,900 MTCO2e. These include LED lighting retrofits, HVAC equipment and controls upgrades, combined heat and power plant repairs and upgrades at the central plant and 610 Huntington residence hall, steam trap maintenance program, and LEED Silver (or higher) equivalent green building design & construction strategies including high-efficiency HVAC equipment, insulation, controls, etc. The CEIS building is the latest new construction project was designed to save 37% on energy costs compared to baseline construction, and hosts the first solar PV array on campus.
