A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:
In 2018, a Wesleyan student conducted a survey of students (n=212, approximately a 7 percent response rate), faculty (n=17), and staff (n=33). Of student responses, 12% (25 students) indicated they have a car on campus. Wesleyan has not explicitly conducted a survey of student commuting habits on-campus, but the study did collect data on-off-campus commuting habits (to get home for breaks, get off-campus). Data below is extrapolated from past Sightlines assumptions of rate of on-campus student SOV travel.

A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting:
Data is extrapolated from a 2017 commute survey sent to 100% of employees in partnership with CTrides. For the survey, we received 260 responses, approximately a 26% response rate. Within those responses:
Drive alone: 164 indicated they drive alone daily (63.1%), and 48 do so 2-4 times a week (18.4%) = 81.5% drive alone as their primary mode of transportation
Carpool: 3 carpool daily (1.2%), 6 carpool 2-4 times a week (2.3%) = 3.3% carpool as their primary mode of transportation
Public transit: 2 take transit 2-4 times a week = 0.7% take transit as their primary mode of transportation
Bike: 7 bike daily (2.7%), 1 bike 2-4 times a week (0.3%) = 3% bike as their primary mode of transportation
Walk: 28 walk daily (10.8%), 20 bike 2-4 times a week (7.7%) = 18.5% walk as their primary mode of transportation
The numbers below are rounded from the above numbers, as employees were allowed to select the frequency of the above modes so numbers do not add up to 100%. Non-SOV data is rounded down, assuming a skewed sample of individuals wishing to participate in the survey. We did not collect data on zero-emissions vehicles.
