Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
ASWC Carbon Tax on Transportation

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The ASWC Carbon Tax program was instituted by the ASWC Senate in SAS16.2 as an effective way to help mitigate the effects of travel-related carbon emissions, educate the members of ASWC on the environmental impacts of their travel, and encourage less harmful forms of transportation. This tax sets aside a part of each grant request from the Travel and Student Development Fund. These funds are deposited in the ASWC Green Fund at the close of the fiscal year. This fund is then used to sponsor student sustainability initiatives throughout campus. The tax is leveraged utilizing the number of time zones crossed. The tax also includes the method of transportation being utilized. If a student travels within one time zone by train, or bus $5 dollars is allocated to the green fund. On the other hand if a student travels one time zone by airplane $10 is allocated to the green fund. This structure emphasizes the use of train or bus, over single occupancy vehicles, and airline travel. Additionally the program was developed to encourage shorter distance transportation or web attendance.
