Whitman College participates in the Sustainable Living Center's $mart Business Partner program, which has over 50 local partners. The $mart Business Partner Program is a free advisory service that: provides a guide and assistance in setting and achieving goals to reduce energy, water, waste, and purchasing costs; offers on-site visits and tools to achieve goals; publicly recognizes businesses for their efforts to become sustainable by setting environmental goals; awards decals to $mart Business Partners so that local consumers can shop green. Whitman College won the 2017 Chamber of Commerce Large Business Award in 2017.

Whitman College and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on May 19, 2017. The document constitutes a formal commitment to collaborate on the development of curricula focused on Native American studies while strengthening Native American recruitment and retention at Whitman. It also provides a framework to identify areas of shared research interests and facilitate the transition of CTUIR students into institutions of higher learning.

The Whitman Community Fellow Initiative funds a cohort of juniors and seniors to spend an academic year working part-time at a prominent Walla Walla Valley organization to address some of the area’s social, economic and cultural challenges. Community Fellows meet successful, high-level leaders in Walla Walla and receive professional mentoring, targeted career development guidance, and broad exposure to local organizations in addition to the one where they work. Community Fellows also learn about important issues in southeastern Washington.
2019-2020 partner organizations are: Blue Mountain Land Trust, Central Washington Justice for Our Neighbors, Blue Mountain Action Council, Sustainable Living Center, Walla Walla County Department of Community Health, Blue Mountain Heart to Heart, United Way of the Blue Mountains, Mercy Corps Northwest, Walla Walla Symphony, Walla Walla County Department of Court Services/Juvenile Justice Center, Pioneer United Methodist Church, Blue Mountain Humane Society, and YWCA Walla Walla.
