Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
Yes
A brief description of the incentive program(s):
The Yale School of the Environment (YSE) faculty each belong to a different learning community within the school. There are a total of ten (10) learning communities, and in the 2020-2021 academic year, YSE added 18 new courses, including “Decarbonization Pathways to Limit Climate Change.” This course examines the scale of the climate problem and pathways to achieve net-zero emissions, and investigates countries’ commitments to strengthen global response.
A brief description of the incentives that academic staff who participate in the program(s) receive:
Faculty at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE) are incentivized to create new courses in sustainability based on curricular demands. Additionally, each of the 10 learning communities within YSE is granted $20,000 each year, with the ask that the faculty within them develop new courses. For example, the "Water" learning community developed a water resource management class in 2021.
