A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
York University is committed to reducing our carbon emissions and being carbon neutral on or before 2040. In October 2022, York announced ambitious new sustainability goals, the expansion of sustainability office, and a targeted plan to achieve net-zero, which will aim to curb the University’s direct and indirect emissions by 45% by 2030.

1) Through the Ecological Footprint Initiative in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, York University has measured its GHG missions and the ecological footprint of York University and its institutional activities. This includes scope 1 direct energy emissions, scope 2 emissions purchased from utilities, and scope 3 emissions which includes Transportation (commuting, business travel etc.), and Procurement of Goods and Services. This will help York University assess and manage reductions, as well as identify enhancements opportunities.

2) York University has undertaken a variety of energy management programs over the past 10 years to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Staff in Facilities Services Department are developing an Energy Management Plan to accelerate GHG reductions from the central utilities and deep retrofits to buildings.

3) Facilities Services Department has incorporated sustainability principles in new buildings and renovations that consider design efficiency, broader use of daylighting, water efficiency, energy conservation and performance, reduction in emissions, materials and resources, green construction practices, indoor environmental quality and site re naturalization.

4) The York community creates awareness and generates community engagement, action and research, using York’s campuses as ‘living labs’ through experiential education.
